Elections 101: Demystifying the Path to Leadership at WMLAR
Every year, the West Michigan Lakeshore Association of REALTORS® (WMLAR) seeks new leaders to join our Board of Directors and guide the future of our association. Yet, time and again, we hear the same questions: “How do I run?” “What’s expected of me?” “Do I have enough experience?”
Welcome to Elections 101, your go-to guide for understanding the election process and leadership roles at WMLAR.
Why Run?
WMLAR thrives on strong leadership. More candidates mean more perspectives—and more engagement from our members. If you’ve ever considered serving, now’s the time to learn what’s involved and why your voice matters.
The Board: Roles and Terms
- Three Board seats are elected each year. Each term lasts three years, and a member may serve two consecutive terms before taking a mandatory break.
- One past president is appointed annually by the incoming president (and approved by the Board) to offer historical perspective.
- President-Elect/Treasurer is also elected by the membership and must have previously served on the Board.
Our Organizational Structure
WMLAR operates three key entities:
- The Association – A 501(c)(6) nonprofit trade organization with over 1,200 members.
- The MLS – A for-profit business under the WMLAR umbrella.
- REALTORS® Who Care – A 501(c)(3) charitable foundation providing community and member support.
The Election Process
- Self-nomination: Any member in good standing may apply via an online form.
- Review: A Nominating Committee (made up of the past seven presidents) vets applicants and approves a slate of candidates.
- Requirements: At least four candidates must run for the three open Board seats.
- Campaigning: Approved candidates can campaign freely—but not on WMLAR’s official platforms.
- Voting: Members have 14 days to vote. Results are announced at the September General Membership Meeting.

What’s the Time Commitment?
- Monthly Board meetings last about two hours, occasionally longer with executive sessions.
- Board members liaise with WMLAR committees, attend occasional special meetings, and stay informed about professional standards cases.
- You’ll receive a pre-meeting packet with financials, agendas, and strategic plan updates—reviewing this material is part of your responsibility.
Your Responsibilities as a Board Member
You’ll be expected to uphold three legal duties:
- Duty of Care: Be informed, attend meetings, and contribute.
- Duty of Loyalty: Prioritize WMLAR’s best interests—above personal or brokerage interests.
- Duty of Obedience: Follow the law, our bylaws, and the REALTOR® Code of Ethics.
Additional Leadership Development
Board members are encouraged to attend:
- NAR Legislative Meetings (May)
- NAR NXT Conference (November)
- Michigan REALTORS® Conventions (January & September)
If elected as President-Elect/Treasurer, you’ll participate in a strategic planning retreat alongside other officers and staff to shape the future of WMLAR.
Ready to Lead?
Running for the WMLAR Board is a meaningful way to make an impact—not just on our association, but on the real estate profession in West Michigan.
