Leadership Academy Session Two Focuses on Conversations, Communication & Conflict Resolution
The second session of the 2026 WMLAR Leadership Academy challenged participants to think differently about one of the most important skills leaders can develop: the ability to navigate meaningful conversations.
Centered around the theme “Leading Conversations That Matter,” the day explored communication from two very different — but equally important — perspectives: active listening and conflict resolution.
The Art of Active Listening
The morning session featured Laura St. Louis, who shared her presentation, The Art of Active Listening.
Drawing from her background in housing counseling, financial education, and more than a decade of leadership development through Toastmasters International, Laura emphasized the importance of listening with intention and empathy.
Participants explored:
- Why active listening matters in leadership
- Different types of listening
- Practical techniques to improve listening skills
- How communication impacts professional relationships and outcomes
The session encouraged participants to reflect on how listening influences not only client interactions, but also leadership effectiveness within teams, organizations, and communities.
Negotiation & Conflict Resolution
The afternoon session featured nationally recognized mediator and arbitrator Robert “Bob” Wright, who brought decades of experience in dispute resolution, mediation, and negotiation strategy.
Bob shared insights from his extensive legal and mediation career, helping participants better understand:
- Why conflict escalates
- Techniques for navigating difficult conversations
- Negotiation strategies used in professional mediation
- The importance of preserving relationships while resolving disagreements
Participants also engaged in an interactive exercise that allowed them to apply negotiation and communication concepts in a practical setting.
Participant Feedback
Early survey feedback from participants highlighted strong engagement and valuable takeaways from the day’s programming. Attendees particularly noted the value of:
- Learning practical communication strategies
- Discussing real-world conflict scenarios
- Interactive exercises and group participation
- Opportunities for self-reflection and professional growth
Participants described portions of the session as “thought provoking,” “great,” and “a good reminder” of the importance of communication skills in both business and leadership settings.
The Leadership Academy continues June 22 with the theme: “You Are the CEO of Your Business”
The upcoming session will focus on business leadership, strategic decision-making, and running a successful business with intention and efficiency.
WMLAR congratulates the 2026 Leadership Academy cohort for their continued commitment to professional growth and leadership development.
