Stay Alert: Increased Cybersecurity Threats Targeting REALTOR® Members

REALTOR® associations across Michigan are seeing an increase in sophisticated attempts to obtain member login credentials, raising concerns about the security of active listings and pending transactions.

These efforts are designed to access sensitive information and potentially insert fraudulent activity into transactions at critical stages, including closing, with the goal of redirecting funds.

How the Attempts Are Happening

In many cases, individuals are impersonating specific members and using detailed, accurate information to appear credible. This can include cell phone numbers, email addresses, office names, and even NAR member numbers.

They often use familiar real estate terminology and confident communication, making the requests seem legitimate and increasing the risk of sensitive information being shared.

Protecting Your Office and Accounts

There is concern that these attempts could extend beyond association systems and into brokerage offices. Agents and staff are encouraged to remain cautious and avoid sharing any secure or private information with unsolicited callers.

Offices should take time to ensure all team members are aware of this risk and understand proper protocols for handling unexpected requests involving account access or sensitive data.

Two-Factor Authentication

This situation reinforces the importance of stronger account security measures. MichRIC and FlexMLS are currently considering a move toward mandatory two-factor authentication for MLS access.

While some have expressed concerns about added steps in the login process, this added layer of security plays an important role in protecting accounts, transactions, and client information.

Two-factor authentication provides an extra level of verification beyond a password, helping prevent unauthorized access even if login credentials are compromised.

How to Enable Two-Factor Authentication

Members who would like to enable this feature now can do so by following these steps:

  1. Log in to the MLS
  2. Click on Menu, then select My Profile under Preferences
  3. Navigate to Security
  4. Locate Force Multi-Factor Authentication and switch it to “On”
  5. Select how you would like to receive your verification code

Staying Vigilant

Maintaining awareness and taking proactive steps to secure accounts are key to reducing risk. Members are encouraged to stay alert and report any suspicious activity.
